I taught a class on sexual orientation today and this was the best part.

Student: Miss, Are you Gay?

Me: Yes and I identify as bisexual

Student: Wow. Cool.

I love my job.

I discovered some internalized oppression I have of my sexuality today.

I don’t share with my students that I am bisexual because I am afraid that it is “too” sexual. Even though I teach a sex ed class! Sharing with them that I am bisexual is too much for them to handle. It occurred to me today in a LGBTQ workshop I attended at work that I made up as a little kid- heterosexuality is normal and homosexuality is “too” sexy to even discuss. Talking about homosexuality felt like telling someone you masturbate. To be gay was something that was private. Not something you could do in public. As I write this I think about how I have been with past girlfriends regarding PDA (public displays of affection)- I loved kissing my past partners in public because it was so taboo- similar to sex in public. I never sexualized kissing a man in public- that was just the norm.

Its late. And I could go on forever. But I wanted to share what opened up for me in sex/sexuality land.

This might be a trend.

Has this ever happened to you?

I am walking towards the train… And as the doors of the train close..I catch the eye of someone and then they for some reason find me intriguing and we lock eyes… The train door closes and they continue to watch as the train moves faster..They begin to turn and twist their body to keep the stare with the intentions to not disturb those standing around….. I feel like a supermodel in those moments.

I make up in my head that they are watching me because my hair must be blowing in the humid air beautifully- that one lock that is too short must be tucked away perfectly…….my dress must be fitting all the right places..

Especially when it is an unexpected person.. I think its typical that a black male middle aged will check me out.. Yea.. I just generalized.

So, when I have this moment with a Hasidic Jew with curls, hat, and all… Catches me totally by surprise.

And I’ll admit, I think to myself I MUST be supermodel material.

Ok I know this damn book is FICTION! Why non-fiction has slipped...
